In this active, hands-on workshop, participants will leap right into an exploration of theatre as a teaching tool. By engaging in a mini-production of “Croak!” a popular program from the Calgary Zoo’s School Programs, you will see how science nature and drama can all come together to facilitate your students’ learning.

Using this play as an example for inspiration, Sarah M. Smith will then work with you to guide you through the process of using science to develop your own script/story-telling idea. This workshop focuses on making arts education techniques relevant and accessible to science educators. Through an exploration of theatre, story-telling, music, and other performing arts, you will be given curriculum-linked examples of how to turn a science (or math) lesson into something deeply creative, fun, and personally relevant for your students.

Participants are encouraged to bring projects that they hope to work on with students, so that they can use these examples to create their own pathway through artistic creation. Sarah will provide a breakdown of her process and the relevant application to each project, complete with worksheets, and examples. Through workshopping each project together, participants will leave with tools and ideas for bringing theatre into the classroom as a powerful teaching tool.
