In this interactive session, educators will consider how to apply foundational knowledge about First Nations, Métis and Inuit traditions, histories and contemporary realities to the elementary classroom to support reconciliation through education. Engaging students through authentic and meaningful experiences that include Indigenous ways of knowing is key. Take Action for Reconciliation is a new resource from Scholastic Education Canada. The first book for grade 3, Community Ties, focuses on what makes Indigenous communities strong today. This text will be used to guide the discussion with particular attention to relationships, community and identity. There will be a particular focus on the revised Teaching Quality Standard that will come into effect and apply to all certificated staff in September 2019 and Alberta's most recent draft K-4 curriculum.
