Family Separation and Reunification: A Practical Guide for Teachers on Dealing with Reunited Migrant and Separated Refugee Students
This presentation will offer information on the challenges facing separated refugee and reunited migrant students with a focus on Yazidis and Filipinos as a case study. The highly interactive session will offer the participants an insight into the perspective of a focus group of refugee and migrant students; a short video of students’ personal reflections; and strategies for teachers to help reunited/ separated students succeed in school.
Participants can expect to:
1. Understand the dimensions of the separation/ reunification issue and the impact on migrant and refugee students settling in Canada;
2. Learn trauma-informed practice while teaching refugee students;
3. Apply the principles of cultural responsiveness while teaching migrant students;
4. Address the complex needs of students through a variety of suggestions and tools.
