The boys will be boys?

Curriculum and Pedagogy
1 Hour Session
Friday Feb 15   09:00 AM to 10:00 AM (1 hour)
The boys will be boys narrative has been infused in educational systems to the detriment of young men. By inscribing socially constructed masculine characteristics onto boys not only limits their opportunity to form their own identities, but causes them to try to fit into a box that may cause them harm. Boys are at a greater risk of suicide, being identified as having learning disabilities, as well as excluded from school because of discipline procedures that may be misrecognizing symptoms of poor mental health. This session will explore the harm that the boys will be boys narrative is having on young men in schools and open up a space to discuss how educators can shift their perceptions of boys in schools.
