Teaching is guided by a mandated curriculum, but the mandated curriculum is not all that teachers teach. We teach with our actions, with our inactions, with our reactions. Each of our students walk into our schools and classrooms hoping to find a place of belonging where they can be who they are. The lack of positive acknowledgement and representation of sexual and gender minorities in our schools, can make it difficult for some young people to feel that they have a place in the world. Responding to the alarming statistics of our LGBTQA+ students’ school experiences and supported by recent Alberta legislation and the competencies outlined in the TQS, this session will share strategies for teachers to ensure physical and social spaces in the learning environment nurture belonging for all as part of an inclusive teaching practice.
